Advice From a Fellow Freelancer

Roaring Lyon Media recently celebrated its one year anniversary, and with that milestone, comes an important time of reflection. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and working as a Print Editorial Reporter for 3 years, I’ve enjoyed the exciting challenges and lessons that come along with entrepreneurship. This new endeavor has allowed me to connect with new people and adapt to various styles of writing, graphic design, and video production. Freelance marketing opens the door to limitless amounts of creative writing opportunities and an engaging atmosphere. By collaborating with businesses in different industries like pet care products, flexographic printing equipment, and automotive renovations, I’m constantly familiarizing myself with new technologies and how they’re transforming our day to day lives. Looking back on this year, I’m incredibly grateful for the experience gained through valuable partnerships and self discoveries. This article is dedicated to all of the aspiring freelancers, content creators, and marketing newbies out there.

Confidence is Key

Take pride and ownership in all of your work! If the project is something you’re not 90% confident in… then it probably isn’t ready to send. Keep up your confidence by double checking all of your work. As much as some would like it to be, Grammarly isn’t perfect and doesn’t guarantee success, so take the time to personally review  your printwork.

Pro Tip: reading the copy out loud will help you catch any awkward or repetitive phrases— something AI hasn’t exactly mastered yet.

The remaining 10% represents a necessary level of humility we need in order to appreciate valuable feedback. Constructive critiques help both parties paint a clearer picture of the mutual goal. Use these notes to gain better insight into the general industry, but more importantly, the specific brand you’re representing.

Cater to Each & Every Client

Marketing strategies aren’t a one-size-fits-all concept. Plans that excel with one client, may not work well with another, so approach every marketing project with an open mind & understand that there may be bumps along the way.

Utilizing skills in communication and creativity, our ultimate goal is to accommodate the clients as much as possible and create something that is truly unique. Some of the things you love, the client may hate. As you adapt to their individual style, remember that the goal is not to promote our own vision, but to amplify your client’s voice and aesthetic. Deep-dive into their brand identity as much as possible, honing in on what makes their business truly unique. The most challenging projects are the best opportunities to push the boundaries, sharpen your skills, and expand the portfolio. Show off and build your range!! 👏

Establish Credibility

Never be afraid to ask questions, present bold pitches, organize team meetings, and initiate  follow ups. These steps help demonstrate a strong initiative, establish a clear understanding amongst the team, and build personal connections as you collaborate with  peers. Although there is always a learning curve with new teams, remember that us freelancers are supposed to be the marketing experts. That’s why we’re here! Ensure your client feels just as confident in your abilities by illustrating the direct impact of your marketing. Explain your creative process and why your  approach is uniquely effective. We know the numbers don’t lie, so sharing important analytics like SEO reports will show  that the stats back your work.
